RMF Hosts First Annual Diversity Conference

Uniondale, Long Island, New York, March 26, 2007 – On Sunday, March 18, 2007, the law office of Ruskin Moscou Faltischek, P.C. hosted the First Annual Diversity Conference, which sought to bring together high school students, college students, law students and attorneys for a day of information, training and mentoring. This event was co-sponsored by Touro Law Center’s Latino American Law Student Association (LALSA) and the Dominican Bar Association.

Keynote speaker was Hon. Dora L. Irizarry, E.D.N.Y, who echoed the theme of the conference, The Path to Unity Starts with Education. She spoke to attendees about her personal struggles and the motivations that shaped her career. Other guest speakers included Legislator David Mejias; Hempstead Town Clerk Mark Bonilla; and Hon. Lucindo Suarez, who shared their achievements and insights. The Town of Hempstead presented citations to Elsa Marte Hampton, President of the Dominican Bar Association, Hon. Dora L. Irizarry, Lisa Purzak, President of LALSA and Douglas J. Good of the law firm Ruskin Moscou Faltischek, in commemoration of the event.

After the presentations, the attendees divided into group-specific seminars. The attorneys received a presentation on summary jury trials given by Hon. Lucindo Suarez. The law students heard a presentation by Professor Theodore Silver of Touro Law Center, who offered a mini-bar prep review; Professor Fabio Arcila, also of Touro, introduced students to the HNBA Mentoring Program; and Joey Novick, Esq., a Flemington, NJ Councilman offered a talk on mediation through improvisation. Michelle Santangelo, Director of Long Island Housing Services, presented on resources available regarding local, state and federal fair housing rights.

During the luncheon sponsored by Ruskin Moscou Faltischek, attendees were able to sit down in the boardroom and have an informal conversation with all dignitaries present.
