Uniondale, Long Island, New York, April 22, 2009 – Ruskin Moscou Faltischek announced today it has implemented a series of environmentally conscious steps to move the firm towards more sustainable practices and to eliminate activities that may have a negative effect on the workplace and the environment. It is believed the law firm is one of the first on Long Island to implement such a program.
Led by Ruskin Moscou Faltischek litigation partner Joseph R. Harbeson, who chairs the firm’s Green Committee, the firm has already implemented Phase One of the ongoing program. These initiatives include a switch throughout the firm’s offices from standard plastic garbage bags to eco-friendly ones that have accelerated biodegradable properties; the discontinuance of the use of disposable styrofoam cups and dishes; encouraging staff to turn off lights when not in use; replacing standard light bulbs with energy-efficient ones; and two-sided printing to minimize waste, shrink the size of legal files and save on storage costs. The firm also has a prior, ongoing program in conjunction with Ronald McDonald House to recycle depleted ink cartridges.
As part of Phase Two, the firm is presently working to institute a program to recycle cans and bottles, and is working with the management of its office building, RXR Plaza in Uniondale, to explore the possibility of implementing a building-wide paper recycling program.
“It is our belief that we have a responsibility to take a leadership role and do our part to minimize the firm’s eco-footprint,” noted Harbeson. “It is clear each of us can make a significant difference when we make a concerted effort and are truly committed.”
