John J. Cooney, Esq. Presents a CLE at The Nassau Academy of Law

Uniondale, Long Island, New York, March 1, 2016 – Ruskin Moscou Faltischek, P.C. announced today that partner John J. Cooney, Chair of the firm’s Cybersecurity and Data Privacy practice group, recently presented a CLE at The Nassau Academy of Law, entitled How to Investigate and Respond to a Data Breach.  The CLE addressed the cybersecurity risks that can threaten the reputation and financial health of any practice or entity and the implicit legal and logistical challenges, strategies to protecting clients, and investigating breaches and navigating reporting requirements.  Kevin Edwards, Director at Flexible Systems in Hauppauge, was a co-presenter and addressed the steps necessary to conduct an investigation and the latest threats facing organizations.  Mr. Cooney and Mr. Edwards emphasized the need for a strong technical and legal team to conduct the investigation, especially in light of recent federal court decisions that have held that data breach investigation documents are protected by attorney-client privilege and the work product doctrine.

Mr. Edwards oversees Flexible System’s Compliance and IT Security team, working with clients to assess, identify, and mitigate vulnerabilities.  Flexible Systems is a full-service IT company located in Hauppauge, Long Island and it provides IT support, technology consulting, compliance & IT security consulting, and internet marketing services.

John J. Cooney serves a Partner at Ruskin Moscou Faltischek where he is chair of the Firm’s Cybersecurity and Data Privacy practice group.  He is also a member of the Firm’s Health Law Department and the White Collar Crime and Investigations practice group.   Mr. Cooney has successfully represented clients in a wide variety of sophisticated criminal and civil cases involving federal and state authorities, including matters involving breach investigations, responses and regulatory defense.  Mr. Cooney is a former United States Marine Corps officer and combat veteran of the Persian Gulf War. After serving his country, Mr. Cooney was trained as a software engineer at Columbia University, and his technical background proves particularly useful in the cybersecurity and data privacy arena as well as in complex fraud investigations and litigation.
