Uniondale, NY – January 12, 2017 – Ruskin Moscou Faltischek P.C., announces that John Cooney, a partner at the law firm and chair of the firm’s Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Department, has been selected by National Law Journal as a Cybersecurity & Data Privacy Trailblazer.  A highly esteemed and honorable recognition, Cooney is one of 50 selected nationwide from over hundreds of nominations, according to Kenneth A. Gary, Vice President and Group Publisher, The National Law Journal.

“John heads up Ruskin Moscou Faltischek’s fastest growing department, a highly specialized and skilled practice group.  Today, businesses across all industries turn to John and his team for their essential skillset and ability to mitigate the likelihood of security breaches, regulatory investigations and lawsuits as well as respond swiftly to a security incident to minimize loss and reduce legal liability.  This honor for John is very well deserved,” said Adam Silvers, Managing Partner, Ruskin Moscou Faltischek P.C.

John Cooney joined Ruskin Moscou Faltischek P.C. with over 15 years of management and leadership experience at various Fortune 200 companies.  He is a former U.S. Marine Corps officer and combat veteran of the Persian Gulf War.  After serving his country, he was trained as a software engineer at Columbia University.  In addition to heading up the Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Department, John manages RMF’s complex fraud investigations and litigation, including healthcare fraud, OIG fraud, OMIG fraud, which have increasingly involved information technologies and analytics.

“I am very honored to have been included on the National Law Journal’s very impressive list of cybersecurity experts,” said John Cooney.  “I am passionate about what I do and work diligently with my clients to make sure they work cyber risk into their overall risk business plans.  With an unpredictable future, it is imperative to their bottom line.”

Ruskin Moscou Faltischek’s Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Practice Group conducts breach investigations and responses, regulatory and litigation defense, and compliance and data breach prevention. Bringing together multiple disciplines within the law firm, John works with a team of skilled attorneys who respond quickly to minimize loss of business and to mitigate legal liability. The team works closely with trusted technology professionals to provide an integrated solution, and, if needed, investigation and defense following cybersecurity attacks.

Besides his professional accomplishments, John dedicates a substantial amount of time to serving the Long Island community. He is currently the commander of the Northport American Legion Post 694, which actively supports Long Island’s youth, veterans, and those in need. In addition, for over a decade, he has led  efforts to support Long Island’s brave men and women serving overseas and to assist their families at home. His efforts have been recognized and commended by Long Island leaders and he received the 2014 Social Work Community Recognition Award from the Northport VA Medical Center.

The evolution of technology has made data security of critical importance to every industry including retail, healthcare, energy, finance, technology, communications and hospitality. Ruskin Moscou Faltischek recognized early on that cybersecurity legal issues are simply too broad and the consequences too devastating for a business to go it alone.  Organizations need to be vigilant about internal and external threats to protect themselves from economic and reputational fallout, including shareholder derivative actions targeting directors and officers. Federal and state agencies such as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), New York Department of Financial Services (DFS), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Office of Civil Rights (OCR) are creating new regulations and ramping up enforcement efforts of existing data privacy laws.

For more than 48 years, Ruskin Moscou Faltischek P.C., headquartered in Uniondale, has built a reputation as one of the region’s leading providers of innovative legal services. Its attorneys are practical, experienced advocates who measure their success by their clients’ success.
