Formed Nassau County Judge Lea Ruskin & Melvyn B. Ruskin, ESQ. Teamed Up With the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to Raise Awareness and Dollars

Long Island, NY – Hon. Lea Ruskin, former Nassau County District Court Judge, and Mel Ruskin, Founding Partner of the Uniondale law firm, Ruskin Moscou Faltischek P.C., joined nearly 5,000 Long Islanders as Corporate Co-Chairs to commemorate the more than 1 million Americans affected by blood cancers by lighting up the Long Island sky with illuminated lanterns at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Light The Night Walk held in October.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) 2014 Light The Night Walks raised an incredible $890,000, which is the highest ever raised on Long Island. The organization is hoping to reach $1 Million by December 31st. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer. The LLS mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS funds lifesaving blood cancer research around the world, provides free information and support services, and is the voice for all blood cancer patients seeking access to quality, affordable, coordinated care. An estimated total of 149,990 people in the U.S. were expected to have been diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma last year. Unlike many other forms of cancer, there are no means of preventing or screening for these diseases, so LLS focuses on finding cures and ensuring access to treatments for current patients.

Lea & Mel know all too well the importance of funding advances in blood cancer research. In March 2013, Lea was diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma, a blood cancer that is usually already widespread throughout the body when diagnosed. Lea underwent nearly a full year of treatment – including chemotherapy, radiation, stem cell extraction and replacement – and is now a survivor in full remission.

With the help of family and friends, Lea & Mel gathered up sponsors, donations, and most importantly, support in preparation for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 2014 Light The Night Walk. The Ruskin’s team raised over $89,000 in hopes to help The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society continue their research for new and innovative treatments to help cure blood cancers.

“It was an honor to be a part of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 2014 Light The Night Walk. Being a survivor of Mantle Cell Lymphoma and seeing all those lanterns of survivors, in memory or in support was uplifting because it meant that one day soon we will find a cure for all blood borne cancers.” said Lea Ruskin.
